What Is Melasma?

Melasma is a common skin condition that causes brown or gray-brown patches, usually on the face. These patches typically appear on the cheeks, forehead, nose, or upper lip and can vary in size and shape. Melasma is more prevalent in women and often becomes more noticeable during pregnancy or with prolonged sun exposure. The condition is not harmful but can cause cosmetic concerns for those affected. While it can fade over time, treatment may be necessary for persistent cases.

What Are the Causes of Melasma?

Hormonal Changes

Pregnancy, birth control pills, and hormone replacement therapy can increase melanin production, leading to the development of melasma. These hormonal shifts make the skin more sensitive to sunlight, exacerbating the condition.

Sun Exposure

UV rays stimulate melanocytes, the cells that produce pigment, which can worsen or trigger melasma. Sun exposure is one of the most significant factors in the development of melasma.

Genetics

A family history of melasma can increase the likelihood of developing the condition. Those with a genetic predisposition are more prone to this pigmentation disorder.

Medications

Certain medications that make the skin more sensitive to sunlight can trigger melasma. These include drugs like photosensitizing agents and some types of antibiotics.

Skin Irritation

Using harsh skin care products or undergoing aggressive treatments can lead to melasma in sensitive individuals. Irritated skin is more likely to react with hyperpigmentation.
